Optus (News - Alert), an Australian provider of mobile communications, mobile technology and broadband entertainment services, recently launched an initiative with Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd, a provider of products and services for satellite-based broadband communications, to install over 48,000 Gilat SkyEdge II VSATs as part of the NBN Co's Interim Satellite Service.

Gilat has now completed the installation of 10,000 VSATs for the service that will enable the delivery of broadband services to Australian households and businesses across the country.

Households, small businesses, Indigenous communities, not-for-profit organizations and educational, health and local government facilities located in some of the remote areas of Australia will be accessing the high-speed satellite service, to be offered over the national broadband network.

Gilat’s SkyEdge II advanced capabilities in multi-beam environments will be instrumental in delivering the service, which will also make use of IPSTAR’s Ka/Ku multi-spotbeam capacity and Optus' Ku capacity over Australia.

According to Gilat, SkyEdge II is designed and optimized for broadband communications via satellite supporting data, VoIP and video applications, and it is stated to be an ideal solution for broadband IP networks with high-speed inbound requirements.

“Satellite-based connectivity is a critical element in NBN Co’s commitment to offering broadband services across Australia, and Gilat's expertise in delivering large scale projects has been key to helping Optus meet this important milestone of connecting more than 10,000 sites,” remarked Erez Antebi, CEO at Gilat Satellite Networks (News - Alert). “We are very pleased to have achieved this milestone ahead of time and see this as an important accomplishment for both Gilat and Optus. The rapid deployment is a testament to the teams' cooperation and dedication in supporting NBN Co’s commitment to delivering high-speed broadband to Australians living in rural and remote locations.”

In related news, Gilat's SkyEdge II platform was used by Servicio Satelital, and Optus won the “Customer Experience Leadership Award” at Nuance's (News - Alert) Summit.
