Oman : Ghedex, Trainex, Jobex kick off [TendersInfo (India)]

(TendersInfo (India) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Technology is changing the face of higher education. Learning does not only happen inside the four walls of the classroom, it can happen anywhere thanks to the smartphone proliferation, says Dr Maha Kobeil, Dean, Majan University College. She was speaking to the Observer after the inauguration of Global Higher Education Exhibition (Ghedex) yesterday under the auspices of Dr Muna bint Fahd al Said, SQU Assistant Vice-Chancellor for External Cooperation at the Oman International Exhibition Centre.

Dr Maha says thanks to smartphones, education is on the fingertips of students. At Majan College, many of the 2,600 students using Smartphones, I pads, tablet computers, laptops or netbooks can access their assignments and teaching materials. They can submit their assignments and also read books and journals and they do not really need to move if they are sitting in the home, canteen, adds Dr Maha. With the constantly changing schedules of college students, smartphones are an easy way to stay on top of things. In some colleges, the students practically live on social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Most colleges and classrooms in Oman are Wi-Fi enabled. Some college campuses have been managing the influx of mobile devices and have had mobility-related bandwidth challenges solved for some time. The impact of smartphone proliferation and the future of digital content is to be seen to be believed. Most colleges are exploring technology and new apps to bring it into the classrooms. In another interview with the Observer, Dr A V Thomas, Deputy Dean (Academic), International College of Engineering & Management, says once the Oman University is in place there will be no need for foreign affiliations for colleges in Oman. As of now colleges are not degree awarding bodies in Oman.
