Wired Telecommunications Carriers in Australia Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

(PR Web Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Melbourne, Australia (PRWEB) February 12, 2013 The need to communicate is part of the everyday lives of Australian households, businesses and government offices. However, the ways in which people communicate are changing, which is having a negative effect on the Wired Telecommunications Carriers industry. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Craig Shulman, “Australians now place a greater importance on constant connectivity and as such, mobile phones are the dominant form of communication”. This industry involves the operation of hardline telephony and data (largely voice services over landlines). Most importantly, these companies own the infrastructure that the services are sold over.

Wired communication services still perform an essential role in society, with the vast majority of Australia's 8.5 million households having a fixed line telephony service. Telstra Corporation Limited dominates the Wired Telecommunications Carriers industry with the largest network in Australia. SingTel Optus Pty Limited and M2 Telecommunications Group Limited are also major players in the industry. Technological improvements and advances in telecommunications have driven substitution from wired services to other telecommunications streams, particularly wireless, during the past five years. “Industry revenue is forecast to decline by 9.7% in 2012-13, making it the tenth consecutive year of decline”, says Shulman. In the five years through 2012-13, revenue is expected to fall by 10.6% per annum.

The industry's deteriorating revenue has been the result of a decline in the number of access lines in use during the past five years, particularly residential lines, and a decline in usage demand. Since 2008, a greater number of residential households have been opting to cancel their fixed access lines and rely on their mobile or naked broadband services, thereby avoiding costly fixed line fees. IBISWorld expects the number of households cancelling their fixed access lines to continue growing over the next five years.
