The City of Macon, Georgia, Awards Harris Corporation $7 Million Contract for Public Safety Communications System
MELBOURNE, Fla. & MACON, Ga. --(Business Wire)--
The City of Macon, Georgia has taken the first step to give its first
responders an interoperable communication system that will seamlessly
connect Macon police and fire departments and the Bibb County sheriff's
office.
The City of Macon has awarded Harris Corporation (News - Alert) (NYSE:HRS) a $7.68
million contract to deploy a three-site 800 MHz Project 25 (P25)
simulcast system designed to deliver highly reliable communications to
the city's public safety personnel. The new system will easily
accommodate future growth, and integrate with new technologies such as
LTE (News - Alert) (Long-Term Evolution) networks.
"Modernization of our legacy communications system called for a
cutting-edge yet standards-based system to deliver necessary voice and
data capability and true interoperability to our first responders," said
Dale Walker, Chief Administrative Officer, City of Macon. "The Harris
solution proved to be the most fault tolerant option to give Macon's
public safety agencies the reliability, connectivity and functionality
they need."
The solution includes nearly 700 Harris Unity XG-100 full-spectrum
mobile and portable multiband radios that operate on VHF, UHF, 700 MHz
and 800 MHz frequency bands. In addition, the Harris P25 simulcast
system will include an OpenSky® overlay and Wi-Fi hot spots
for a multi-tier mobile data solution that enables constant data
connectivity via OpenSky modems installed in select city vehicles.
"Our Harris solution fully delivers on Macon's requirements today for
interoperable mission-critical voic and data communications, with an
integrated path to new LTE capabilities," said Steve Marschilok,
president, Harris Public Safety and Professional Communications.
The Harris P25 system is part of the VIDA® network, a unified
Internet Protocol-based voice and data communication system based on
APCO P25 industry standards. VIDA delivers full IP management features,
including interoperability without intervention of console operators, IP
